Born in Milan to a Swiss father and an Italian mother, Pietro Chiesa (1892-1948) is renowned as one of the most innovative figures in the panorama of Italian decorative arts of the first half of the 20th century.

In 1921, after an apprenticeship with the glassmaker Giannotti, he opened his own workshop for glass processing and in those early 1920s he participated in the Monza Biennale, the Venice Biennale, the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the exhibitions in Cologne and Barcelona. In his work, he combines extreme modernity and high technical skill. In 1932 he was called by Gio Ponti to share the artistic direction of the newly born FontanaArte, a role that gave him the opportunity to express all his creativity by designing over a thousand different objects (furniture, tables, lamps, windows, etc.). Some of these pieces have entered the  history of design and are still in production today.
