East meets West in Jaime Hayòn's playful retouching of a traditional Asian lantern in a contemporary expression. He captured the essence of this iconic lantern, blending ancient craftsmanship and materials, such as rice paper, into a new lamp designed for a modern setting. The final effect is a suspension lamp that gives light and at the same time "appears" light.
Paper lanterns have been around for centuries in different sizes, shapes and colors, which have different meanings depending on the culture, often used to celebrate or simply decorate to reflect hope and prosperity. With Hayòn's paper lanterns, the various sizes and shapes appear together reflecting his penchant for playfulness, breaking all cultural constraints to reinvent something old but new. Hayòn kept the color white to make the appearance of the lamps themselves clearer, and for even more illumination he cut the lower shape in half, leaving it open, with a secret desire to illuminate people's lives, literally and symbolically.
