In 1957 the Castiglioni brothers planned the restructuring of the Milan Chamber of Commerce. The Giunta room was conceived with a large central table and a lighting system whose purpose was to concentrate the light on the top, at the same time, illuminate the rest of the room. Thus was born Saliscendi, a mobile lamp capable of modifying the light intensity by moving through a system of pulleys; a system that allowed a light source to be moved downwards and upwards, thus adjusting the intensity of the light both on the table top and in the surrounding environment.
At the same time, the same system allows the reflecting disk positioned above the source to be brought closer or further away. Disc and lamp body slide in opposite directions along the cables, approaching or moving away. The distance between the two elements changes with a simple gesture, a hand pushing or pulling a small eyelet placed at the lower end of the lamp body. When the light source is brought close to the table, the direct light is concentrated on the underlying surface, while the indirect light illuminates the ceiling while the distant disc creates no obstacles. When the light source rises, moving away from the table, there is more light in the room but the lighting is dimmer: This is where the disk intervenes, now higher and closer, which reflects the indirect emission and increases the amount of diffused light in the environment. Saliscendi today is produced in a more technological re-edition in step with the times. First of all, the dimensions of the lamp are reduced to allow installation in more versatile environments, the support cables now also act as a power supply and two LED sources provide adequate lighting.
Concept: Metal body painted in the glossy gray white, ruby red and grass green finishes. PMMA diffuser, double dimmable LED source. Two-tone reflector: white on the inside, painted in the same finish as the lamp body on the outside. Socket for raising/lowering the metal lamp. Metal wire cover, acephaly resin pulleys (POM), black support cables/conductors.
