Memphis Squash bowl

Maria Sanchez's 1985 Squash series by Maria Sanchez fully embodies the spirit of the Memphis movement, characterised by vibrant colours, bold geometric shapes and unconventional compositions. In this series, each colour variation represents an exploration of contrasts and harmonies, with a deliberately provocative and dynamic aesthetic.

The bowls are distinguished by the use of saturated tones and surprising combinations, such as the encounter between yellow and light blue, the contrast between deep red and black, or the liveliness of fluorescent shades that challenge colour conventions. Added to these basics is the interplay of shapes: diagonal parallelepipeds, squares and curves intertwine, creating objects that almost seem to be in motion. The hand-painted surfaces emphasise the handcrafted aspect of each piece, lending uniqueness and warmth to the work.

Each variation in the series celebrates the Memphis philosophy: a design that combines functionality and decoration with irony and a joyful subversion of the rules.
