Sheraton is not simply a mirror, but an enigmatic gateway, a monumental threshold that seems to open into another dimension. Conceived by Luigi Serafini in the early 1980s, at the dawn of the Memphis movement, this work fascinates with its theatrical presence and the perceptual play it triggers. Its structure is imposing, almost architectural: two black metal legs support it like totemic columns, resting on circular bases that resemble pedestals from which the object seems to want to take flight, openly defying gravity. The mirror is framed by a thick structure of decorative laminate, vibrant in strong and decisive tones, like a visual echo of the free and provocative language typical of the Memphis group. Sheraton is an expression of a design that never tries to be reassuring. It is paradoxical, surreal, ironic: the illusion of reflection is intertwined with visual reversal, turning the object into a visual and conceptual short-circuit. It reflects not only the image, but also the very idea of looking and being looked at. In 2024, Sheraton was featured in a retrospective at the MART in Rovereto, Italy, which celebrated Serafini's visionary universe: a world in which bizarreness is truth, irony is method, and design becomes a bridge between imagination and matter. With Sheraton, Serafini signs a work that more than a mirror is a statement: a portal to the absurd, where anything is possible.
