Hyatt by Memphis Milano, designed by Ettore Sottsass in 1984, is a coffee table that perfectly embodies the radical and reflective spirit of the Memphis movement. Hyatt is now repurposed as a cult object, capable of combining elegance, functionality and bold aesthetics. At first glance, Hyatt looks like a low coffee table with solid, well-calibrated proportions, in which wood veneer dialogues with chrome-plated metal elements, creating a balance between warm materiality and industrial precision. But like every Memphis object, this is not simply a matter of form or style. Hyatt is a project that reflects a broader vision of functionality, far from the logic of marketing and close instead to an anthropological idea of design. It is an object that does not impose itself by ostentation, but by charisma, capable of inhabiting a space with discretion and presence. In its apparent simplicity lies a deep thought, mixing rigor and irony, aesthetics and reflection.
Hyatt is not just a coffee table: it is a fragment of the Sottsassian vision, a design that speaks of time, living, and the meaning of objects in everyday life.
