Memphis Ginza storage unit

Memphis Ginza is a storage unit designed by Masanori Umeda in 1982 for Memphis Milano, the movement that revolutionised radical Italian design in the 1980s. Its unique and ironic shape recalls the robots and mecha of 1970s and 1980s Japanese culture, transforming a piece of furniture into a figure that seems to come to life. Crafted in lacquered wood and decorative laminate, it is enhanced by chrome-plated metal details that accentuate its futuristic and technological appearance.

Ginza is not simply a practical object: it is an cultural expression that fuses different worlds and languages, from the glamour of the Tokyo neighbourhood from which it takes its name, to the collective imagination of science fiction, to the non-conformist thinking that makes design both art and narrative.
