Lettuce by Ettore Sottsass, designed in 1985, is a ceramic serving dish that exemplifies a refined union of functionality and conceptuality, without resorting to the typical colour and geometric patterns associated with Memphis design. This object is distinguished by its formal purity: the white of the ceramic creates a neutral and luminous base, while the black decoration - linear and graphic - adds an intellectual and abstract touch.
The graphic motif does not directly represent the vegetable evoked by the name ‘Lettuce’, but refers to fragments of architectural drawings, suggesting a surreal narrative. The absence of colour and naturalistic figuration invites reflection on a free and personal interpretation: perhaps an idea of outline, of preparation, or of waiting for what is to be served.
This object thus proves to be not only a container for food, but also an element that stimulates the imagination and thought, merging art and design.
