Memphis Casablanca storage unit

Casablanca is a storage unit designed by Ettore Sottsass in 1981, representative of the Memphis Milano movement. This piece of furniture breaks with traditional conventions with its sculptural, eccentric and communicative form. It stands as a statement of intent against minimalism and pure functionality, enhancing the decoration and symbolic meaning of everyday objects.

Made of wood covered with a decorative plastic laminate, Casablanca features lively surfaces with bold and unusual graphic patterns, often characterised by geometric or abstract motifs. Bright colours and contrasts emphasise its scenic presence, transforming it into a work of art as well as a functional element. Its structure is composed of overlapping volumes that develop dynamically, evoking a sense of movement and challenging traditional symmetry.

Casablanca is not just a piece of furniture, but a manifesto of creative freedom. It reflects the intention of Sottsass and the Memphis collective to bring joy, irony and visual complexity back into the domestic environment, giving objects cultural and linguistic meanings in an era of social transformation.
