    Description

The Guframini Pratone Cut Limited Edition, a collaboration between Gufram and the MSCHF art collective, is a contemporary reinterpretation of the iconic 1971 Pratone, a revolutionary piece of Italian design. The Pratone, originally designed by Giorgio Ceretti, Pietro Derossi and Riccardo Rosso for Gufram, was a playful provocation that challenged the conventions of traditional furniture, inviting people to immerse themselves in a giant lawn made of foam, thus overturning the classic idea of comfort and usability in design. MSCHF, known for its irreverent and conceptual approach, took this historical work and transformed it into a miniature version with a radical twist. In their version, blades of grass are cut, revealing an interior of blood-red foam, evoking a visual contrast between the natural green of the grass and the red that recalls a kind of wound or desecration. This intervention invites the public to reflect not only on the original meaning of the Pratone, but also on the implications of a reinterpretation of design as an act of social critique.

Through this transformation, MSCHF and Gufram question the concepts of functionality and beauty, but also the limits and ambitions of radical design. The ‘wound’ of the Pratone Cut recalls the idea of unmasking the interiority of an object that, seemingly playful, conceals a profound complexity, challenging viewers to consider the tensions between art, design and social critique.

This piece continues the provocative spirit of the original work, raising questions about the role of design in transforming society and the strategies it employs to achieve this.
