Flos Seki-Han floor lamp

The Seki-Han floor lamp was originally designed in 1963 and remained in the Flos catalogue until 1966. It embodies the complex and refined design philosophy of Tobia Scarpa, as well as his expertise in wood craftsmanship. This rare piece is distinguished by its intricate structure, made possible by the choice of wood and a manufacturing technique that borrows certain processes from naval architecture. The name is inspired by a symbol of good fortune: in Japan, “seki han” (red rice) is a traditional dish prepared for special occasions, such as the birth of a child.

In 2025, the new re-edition is introduced. Following a decision by Flos and Scarpa himself, the two wooden blades (originally fixed and symmetrical) are now mounted on a mechanism that allows them to move and rotate around the central body of the lamp. This makes it possible to adjust the light emission, which is no longer symmetrical. Even when the blades are fully closed, a thin beam of light remains visible. To emphasize the refined proportions of the blades, the overall height of the lamp has been increased to 185 cm, giving it a dynamic presence that interacts with its surroundings.

The Seki-Han floor version features two vertical ash wood blades, joined by chromed metal connectors, enclosing a tubular LED light source. The wood is cut using state-of-the-art CNC milling technology in Northern Italy and undergoes a special thermal treatment that dries the wood fibers, preventing deformation over time. The natural characteristics of the material ensure that each piece has a unique character.
