The company was born in Merano as a small laboratory where new materials and new stylistic and functional research were experimented, when Dino Gavina and Cesare Cassina collaborated with Arturo Eisenkeil, importer of an innovative polymer coating produced in the United States. Already in these very first years the company made itself known in Italy and subsequently in the rest of the world largely thanks to important designers who accompanied it from the very beginning to international museums around the world, in particular to the MoMa in New York : the brothers Pier Giacomo and Achille Castiglioni and Tobia Scarpa. Flos distinguished itself not only for its stylistic innovations but also for the introduction of materials which until then had not been taken into consideration in production activities, such as the cocoon which was used only as a packaging material.

In 1962 Flos Arco was born, a lamp designed by Italian designers Pier Giacomo Castiglioni and Achille Castiglioni. It is one of the most famous and best-selling industrial design products and an icon of Italian design; it is part of the permanent collections of the Triennale Design Museum in Milan and the MoMA in New York. It is also the first industrial design object to be recognized as protected by copyright on a par with a work of art.

In 1964, when the headquarters were moved to Bovezzo, in the province of Brescia, Sergio Gandini joined Flos first as a director and then as managing director until he became president in 1999.

The seventies were years of great creative and entrepreneurial ferment for Flos; the company experienced great growth and opened its first subsidiary in Germany. In 1974 it acquired Arteluce (a historic Italian luminaire company) as a result, several models designed by Gino Sarfatti (founder of Arteluce in 1936) became part of the Flos product range. In 1979, Flos won its first Golden Compass Award from the Association for Industrial Design with the Parentesi suspension lamp by Achille Castiglioni and Pio Manzù.

In the eighties Flos experimented with new shapes and materials and began a long exclusive collaboration with Philippe Starck, which resulted in a series of international successes (such as: Ara and Miss Sissi). There were also numerous long-lasting collaborations with other world-famous designers; among the many we can mention Antonio Citterio, Jasper Morrison, Marc Newson and Konstantin Grcic.
